Dance
What passes between the performer and audience does not exist in rehearsal, when patterns and shapes are still malleable, full of endless possibility. What goes on in the private, obscure space of the studio, what we don't get to see on the public stage?
"Before the Curtain," a collaborative project born three years ago, documents the work of the dancers of Bubba Gong's repertory company.
Bubba Gong and his Dance Company let me photograph their numerous rehearsals for their annual show. None of the images were staged: they portray dancers in the process of choreographic interpretation, employing themselves as physical, sentient instruments moving through space.
